An Almost Definitive Introduction to MongoDB

January 16, 2015

“MongoDB: The Definitive Guide” is a well-rounded overview of MongoDB from both a developer and a DBA perspective. At least as far as I can tell as a MongoDB beginner with more than 11 years of experience in data warehousing projects.

It is my first book on MongoDB, and it can therefore also be used as an introduction.

Why only four stars?

  • I would have liked to verify the knowledge I gained through exercises. Example tasks are missing here.
  • I am also missing an overview of the entire MongoDB ecosystem and the various additional programs that are now available, such as admin UIs, IDEs, and possibly even integration with Hadoop.
  • There are also a few inconsistencies; for example, some examples do not work.

All in all, a successful book. Whether it is truly “definitive” in the sense of being final remains to be seen after reading other books.
