The two cases, each at full strength

The skeptical case (Weinersmith)

We are being asked to build a self-sustaining civilization on near-zero data about the two questions that matter most for permanence: whether mammals can gestate, be born, and develop normally in 0.38 g, and whether a closed ecological loop can run for years without resupply. Neither has ever been demonstrated. Bone loss is incompletely reversible, SANS (a neuro-ocular syndrome) affects ~70% of long-duration crew, evacuation is impossible, terraforming is a century-plus prospect with today’s tools, and the economics rest on no business case. The honest timeline for a city is the 22nd century.

The optimistic case (Musk / Zubrin)

Every prerequisite is an engineering problem with a visible path. Starship’s booster is already reusable and reflown; the upper stage succeeded on Flights 10 and 11; orbital refueling and landing are hard but not physics-limited. Oxygen ISRU (making it from Martian air) works (MOXIE), water ice is mapped (SWIM), nuclear surface power is funded, water recovery is at 98%. Mice kept muscle mass at 0.33 g, and the reproduction question can be answered empirically rather than assumed fatal. The skeptics, on this view, treat unknown as impossible.

Both cases agree on the facts in the chapters below. They differ on how to weight the unknowns — and on whether “we don’t know” should default to “don’t go” or “go find out.”
