A readiness review ends with a poll. Six gates that would actually move the assessment, each with its status as of this revision and what would flip it.
Four of these gates are engineering: reaching orbit, refueling there, the 2026 launch itself, and scaling oxygen production. The report expects the engineering unknowns to resolve “within a few years one way or another.” Two are biology and ecology, and those could take a decade or more; they are the ones most likely to be genuine showstoppers for settlement. When a gate flips, this page changes.

Which way the evidence would move
§9.1 The report names the thresholds on both sides. Each of these would strengthen the optimistic case: demonstrated orbital refueling; ≥98% closed bioregenerative life support at pilot scale; any healthy mammalian reproduction at partial gravity. Each of these would strengthen the skeptical case: continued Starship upper-stage failures; bone and vision recovery data trending worse; confirmation that 0.38 g impairs mammalian development.
The one rule for reading Mars news
§9.2 Distinguish expedition from settlement in every claim you read. A flags-and-footprints crewed landing — about 30 months, a small crew, Earth-supplied — is a plausible 2030s–2040s goal for NASA, SpaceX, or China, with survivable if serious risks. A self-sustaining city is a different problem class, dependent on closed-loop ecology (never demonstrated), partial-gravity reproduction (untested), and cost reductions (unprecedented). If Musk’s “50-50” 2026 launch does not happen, treat all crewed dates as 2030s-plus. Treat every future-tense Mars date as a corporate aspiration until it is a flight.
