About this guide
What this is, how it's sourced, and what it deliberately is not.
What this is
A living field guide to building and running a one-or-few-person AI company in Germany, written for a technical solo founder. It has three parts: a top-down survey of the agentic-AI tooling landscape — separating what ships today from what’s a bet by interested parties — a light-touch Germany/EU legal and tax overview, and a staged set of recommendations that turns both into an order of operations.
It is deliberately not a vendor pitch, a legal opinion, or a prediction dressed as a fact. Where the source is a vendor or an AI-lab CEO speaking in the future tense, it’s flagged as such. The critical view leans on independent research — academic studies like MAST (NeurIPS 2025) and law-firm analyses — rather than marketing.
How the sources were weighted
Where the picture is contested, independent and primary sources were preferred over vendor marketing:
- Reliability and failure data come from independent research — notably MAST (NeurIPS 2025 Datasets & Benchmarks Track, arXiv:2503.13657) — and academic and law-firm analyses, not vendor claims.
- The named repositories’ descriptions are the projects’ own claims. Independent, audited performance data for “running a whole company with agents” does not yet exist.
- “One-person billion-dollar company” statements are predictions by interested parties (AI-lab CEOs), often stated in the future tense — treated as bets, not outcomes.
Not advice
The legal and tax material is a neutral overview for orientation only. German Freiberufler/Gewerbe classification and all cross-border questions are fact-specific and decided by the authorities. Consult a Steuerberater and Rechtsanwalt before acting.
A note on freshness
GitHub star counts, framework versions, the EU AI Act timeline, and tax thresholds are 2025–2026 snapshots. They’re dated where it matters and revised as the ground shifts. If something here has gone stale, assume the world moved, not that the world was always thus.
