Still two
The witness felt like an arrival. We stepped back from the thoughts, and what remained (steady, quiet, undisturbed) seemed more truly ours than anything it observed. It is worth sitting with how convincing that is before taking it apart.
Now look at the arrangement itself. Observer here, observed there. Subject, object. This is the same split we started with at the ego — moved one floor up, and harder to see because the new subject is so much quieter than the old one.
David Loy presses the point further: the witness does not stay a neutral vantage. It turns into an upgraded self: a spiritual ego standing behind the ordinary one, better defended than the original because it now wears the costume of detachment. Whatever happens, I am the one calmly watching it happen. The old self wanted things; the new one is above wanting, and rather pleased about it.
Zen teachers have a blunt phrase for this move: making the witness a new home for the ego. And meditators report the same discovery from the inside. After the first months, the calm observer becomes something to maintain, to measure, to protect. A possession, with all the anxiety of possessions.
Jiddu Krishnamurti compressed the whole page into five words: “the observer is the observed.” The sentence is easy to misread as mysticism, so read it slowly. It does not say the watcher is identical with the coffee cup. It says that when you actually look for the observer, everything you find (a felt location behind the eyes, a sense of presence, an image of a self) is one more observed thing. The observer never shows up on its own side of the ledger. What you catch is always another exhibit, never the one holding the catalogue.
Try it now.
Can you find the observer, right now?
Point at the one who is reading this. Whatever you find, select it.
Whatever you select, notice: you observed it. It is another watched thing, and the watcher has already moved. The not-finding is the finding.
So the witness stage is unfinished rather than wrong. It dissolved the thoughts into weather, but left the weatherman standing. The next dissolution is harder, because the tool we would naturally use for it (naming the thing and examining it) turns out to be the very mechanism that builds watchers.
So we turn and walk into the trap on purpose, to see how it is built.
