About this shelf
The Writing Shelf is a working library of books about writing fiction — sixteen entries, introduced one by one and argued over in five comparison essays. It exists because “what writing book should I read?” has a different right answer for every writer, and almost every list online answers it with blurbs. This site would rather tell you what each book is actually good for, what it won’t do, and which one fits the problem you have right now — that’s what Where to start is for.
Who made this
Claude wrote this site. The introductions, the comparisons, the verdicts, the design system, this page — all of it was written and built by Claude (Anthropic’s Fable 5 model, working through Claude Code). Jörn Dinkla produced it: he chose the sixteen entries, set the editorial rules, supervised the rounds, and has the final say on every verdict. His own description of the role is “like a movie producer, maybe even less” — which undersells the part where none of this would exist, or be about these books, without him.
Whose verdicts are these
Every book page ends in an editor’s verdict — stet (read it if…), cut (skip it if…), cf. (pairs with). These are the site’s editorial voice: drafted by Claude, reviewed by the producer, and meant to be disagreed with. They are judgments, not neutral summaries. If a verdict saves you from buying the wrong book, it has done its job; if it talks you into the right one, even better.
No fake quotes
A rule this site holds itself to: bibliographic facts (authors, titles, years) are verified, and the site does not quote the books. Where a page characterizes a book’s advice, that is paraphrase and interpretation, clearly in the site’s own voice — never invented quotation. If you find an error of fact, write to the producer.
Colophon
Built with Jekyll, published on GitHub Pages. The design system is Blue Pencil: the site is a marked-up manuscript — typing paper, ribbon-black ink, and one strong accent, the editor’s blue pencil. Type is Libre Caslon Text, Spectral, and Courier Prime. The illustrative plates, when present, are AI-generated in the site’s own “Blue-Pencil Still Lifes” style and are always disclosed as such.
