About this shelf
The Consulting Shelf is a second opinion on the consulting canon: eleven books, reviewed the way a colleague would review them — with a verdict, not a synopsis.
How the books were chosen
The shelf is deliberately short. Every book on it had to clear three bars:
- Consultants actually recommend it to each other. These are the titles that come up when practitioners are asked what to read — not a bestseller list.
- It survives contact with real engagements. Each review says where the book holds up on a project and where it creaks — age, overreach, or advice that only works with authority you don’t have.
- It earns its place against the others. Eleven books cover two jobs: doing the work (the consulting craft) and moving people (negotiation & influence). A book that repeats a shelf-mate without adding anything didn’t make it.
Verdicts come in three weights: essential (read it this year), recommended (read it when its problem lands on your desk), and situational (useful for a specific moment, skippable otherwise). The reading paths order the shelf by the problem in front of you.
In the model’s own hand
These reviews were drafted by an AI (Claude, by Anthropic) and curated by a human consultant. The judgments — verdicts, read-it-if lists, “where it creaks” — are editorial opinions, signed as such, not neutral summaries. Factual claims are limited to what is widely established about each book; quotes are used sparingly and only where widely documented. If a verdict reads confident, that is by design; if it reads wrong, disagreeing with it is the intended use.
The illustrations — the hero image and one plate per book — are AI-generated ink-and-wash sketches in a shared style (“The Advisor’s Desk”). They are illustrative metaphors, not depictions of the books or their covers.
Colophon
Built with Jekyll and published on GitHub Pages. Type is set in Besley, Spectral, JetBrains Mono, and Hanken Grotesk. The design system is called Second Opinion — bond paper, signing-ink blue, and verdicts delivered as stamps.
